The very same day that Nathan presented this to my class, I found a TED talk by Christopher McDougall, who has written a book called Born to Run ( http://borntorun.org/ ).

A brief interview by a New York Times reporter and Christopher McDougall:
In short, I am overly convinced that running barefoot, or at least running with shoes that have thin soles and wide toe boxes, is the best way to ensure good posture and strong joints. I've already encountered numerous stories of runners whose chronic running injuries went away when they stopped using conventional running shoes and either ran barefoot or with minimalist shoes like the ones posted below. This year, Merrell is making a shoe in a trail and casual version called the "Trail Glove" (below in blue/grey) and the "Tough Glove" (brown leather). Vibram has their five-finger line which arguably began the revolution of minimalist shoes. Check out their websites if you are at all interested.
Let me just say to all the RAGNAR folks out there, as well as any other avid runners, that if you've been suffering from chronic injuries due to running, you really need to take what I've mentioned here seriously. Believe me that I will not be buying a pair of typical running shoes again. Happy trails!

Although I'm no a fan of doing presentations, I appreciate the chance to have shared some quips of minimalist footwear with your Physics 30 group. I should have my post on the experience up pretty soon as well. Cheers.
Very interesting stuff John. It makes me want to get some of those funky shoes and take up barefoot running for all the health benefits.
I love being barefoot. I bought some of the Vibram shoes last fall just to wear around town while I am doing errands. It makes for some hilarious looks when I enter a store! I can always tell the days that I put on traditional shoes vs barefoot shoes because I have huge amounts of leg and foot pain. I am looking forward to spring to try running in them.
Great post John! Some interesting ideas for sure! I might have to look into it sometime down the road.... like when it's WARMER!!!
Good job on the 10 miler John!
I've been really wanting to look into this, so thank you for doing alot of the leg work for me. I have been looking at Merrell and Vibram, but I haven't found how they do on cold, somewhat icy roads?! Do you know?
