Signs along the way and the healing power of Paisley's muffins - Weekly Letter

 Dear Sam and girls,

This week has been one for the books. I start every message that way. What can I say - we live in exciting times;)

1. Jessica & Abby the Runaways
On Monday, Jess and Abby betrayed us yet again and returned to Edmonton. To add salt to the wound, Jessica had the audacity to declare she had to "get home for practice. Excuse me? Silly rabbit, THIS is home. I’ll remind her of that every chance I get. 🏠

2. Long Walks with Radar (and Signs from Heaven… maybe)
I’ve been coping with my own unemployment by taking long, dramatic walks with Radar. This week, we met a blue heron by the bridge. Did you know that this "sensitive species" (not quite endangered) symbolizes patience, self-reliance, wisdom, and good fortune! Uh...ok. It was obviously a sign. Naturally, I cried right there on the trail like some sort of Hallmark movie extra. Was it a sign that better days are ahead… or proof that I’ve lost my mind? Time will tell. 🦮

3. Jessica, our Rookie of the Year
Jess hit it big on Friday—getting PLAYER OF THE GAME against Red Deer! I was so proud (and suffering such extreme FOMO as I watched online) that I drove 3.5 hours north the next day to see her play in Olds. Though I spent the 1st quarter trying to eat my Wendys salad and clap at the same time, I spent the remaining 3 quarters trying to hold back tears. There is nothing sweeter than watching your kids find and create their own happiness. Also, shoutout to Abby, MVP of Sisterhood, for picking Jess up at 1 a.m. like the champ she is. 🏅

4. Paisley + Pumpkin Zucchini Muffins = Heaven
Paisley graced us with her presence this week before attending the temple, muffins in tow—pumpkin zucchini with brown butter icing, no less. I mean… HELLO, Paisley. HELLO, fall. HELLO, heaven! She even helped me pull off a light croissant dinner, which we all enjoyed together, proving once again she is basically part angel. 😇

5. Dad the Builder
Dad is now two weeks into Blackcard Construction. Gord’s heart surgery went well (thank heavens), but recovery will be slow. In the meantime, we are SO grateful for steady work—rest assured, rent is covered. Abby and Jess, when choosing a man someday, look for one who knows how to work, is willing to learn new skills, and will not falter when handed a scary construction tool. Trust me, it pays off. 👷

6. Election Madness
By tomorrow night, Cardston will have a shiny new mayor (spoiler: Paula Brown), six new councillors, and two new school trustees. Will chickens be legalized? Will a rec center ever rise from the ashes? Will the promised golf club solve every problem the town has ever had? Big questions, folks. 🗳️

7. Nate on the Move
Nate keeps us laughing. His driver’s test is officially booked for November 6. That gives me 18 more days of chauffeuring him to McDonald's, Lethbridge, and work. I plan to savor every French fry-filled trip. Important side note: only 37 days until Elder Hardy’s Alberta homecoming! (In case you weren't counting.) 🍟

8. Finding Peace
I’ll be honest—my heart’s been heavy. Losing political battles stings, and discouragement sneaks in daily. But the scriptures have been my anchor: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.” That’s been my balm this week. (Listen to the song attached if you want to etch those words into your heart.)  🕊️

Kids, we love you. We trust you. Keep choosing happiness, keep choosing faith, and for heaven’s sake, don’t forget that this messy, muffin-filled, heron-sighting, construction-filled, noisy home is your home.

Love,
Mom (& Dad, & Radar, who is still offended the blue heron ignored him)
