I've recently begun reading to the kids each night as part of our bed time routine. For the most part Abby is the only one who ever really follows the story- but my dull, monotonous voice lulls San and Jess to sleep in no time, which works out great. For the most part, it's been a great way to end our busy days.

Sign of the Beaver
A Christmas Carol
Currently we are reading Anne of Green Gabels and I am loving it! I grew up watching the movie, and the book is every bit as good! That usually is the case though, isn't it.
The problem is we are halfway through it, and I am fresh out of ideas of what we should read next.
So....what was your favorite book as a Child?
I'd love your suggestions!

Chronicles of Narnia, Artmeis Fowl, Amelia Bedlia, The Wizard of OZ (series), The Boxcar Children, and/or Little House on the prairie.
We just read "The Hiding Place" in our book club -- by Corrie Ten Boom. I remember reading it when I was younger, and I enjoyed it again this time -- it's about the war/concentration camps, and the main character and her family were able to help hide Jews but ended up being found out... You might enjoy it! Let me know if you read it and what you thought...
The Secret Garden.
The Secret Garden gets my vote too. My grade 5 class gave it to me when I moved away and I have always enjoyed it. I also enjoyed A Walk in Wolf Woods by Mary Stewart. It took me awhile to find a copy of that one though. I don't know how available it would be for a book club!
Anne of Green Gables was and will probably always be my favorite book/series of all time. Anne's feelings about her red hair made her an instant kindred spirit to me! As a child I also loved the Boxcar Children and The Great Brain series. Of course, Tuck Everlasting and Bridge to Terabithia were favs too. In my Children's Literature class in college I was introduced to the book Beauty by Robin McKinley. It is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and I LOVED it! Okay, and many many others too!
I remember reading and loving Where the Red Fern Grows as well. A Wrinkle In Time was another of my elementary school years favourites.
My mom used to read us Little House on the Prairie books. She bought me the series when Ella was born and I have read a few of them to her and the boys. I enjoy reading them as much as the kids enjoy listening to them. I always wish we lived back then after reading them!

I loved Wind in the Willows, I read it as an adult but think the kids would like it too. I recently got hooked on Elizabeth Berg for adult novels. I liked her short stories - try 'the day I ate whatever I wanted'. I found they were so true to life. But beware that there may be some swears (I haven't found much lately without one).
if you can find 'the bobbsey twins' those were my absolute fave growing up. there's also anything by enid blyton, 'king of the wind', 'black beauty', 'heidi' (of which i just discovered i have 3 copies!), 'the neverending story' and i started reading one with my kids called 'how to be a pirate' by cressida cowell. it's apparently a sequel to 'how to train a dragon' which i've never read but it is stinkin' hilarious; a definite must read especially as your boys get older!
ps-i totally lurk and your family is beautiful and when we thought maigan was supposed to be a nate, nikki gave us a frame that said nate and i still have it and i wish i saw you once in a while and could give it to you because we're never going to use and well, you have a nate and i clearly do not. soooo, if you're ever in town, let me know. i have a really cute personalized frame for your baby. and also, your picture of the temple with the deer finally helped me understand just exactly why someone might actually choose to live in cardston. no offense, of course. but it's so beautiful!
Tanis - I just found a great book that I thought I would pass along. Granted...it isn't one to read for book club but it has a lot of ideas that could be used for book club books!
It is called "Everything I Need to Know I Learned from a Children's Book" edited by Anita Silvey. The book has a blurb by "notable people" that describes something they learned from a book from their childhood. There is then a short synopsis of the book they mentioned as well as a sample page from the book.
I already have 4 or 5 books that I want to read and I just finished the first section of the book. See if you can get the Cardston Library to bring it in if they don't already have it.
