Basketball in sub zero temperatures

Thank goodness for weekends, that's what I say!

After a week of busyness as John went here and there doing who knows what, we finally got to Saturday.      Sure, there was still lots to do-  Jess had to recover from the flu, we had to get rid of our recycling, abby and sam had champs, Abby had play practice, etc etc.
BUT it was the weekend, which meant that we got to do all those things together!:)

Sam and Abby's basketball skills have both improved a bit from last year which has been good to see.
We took some time before dinner to set up our basketball hoop and work on a few things with them.

It turned into an impromtu game of two on two.

It was so fun to play together, I almost didn't want it to end.
(Except that my fingers got so cold I thought they were going to fall off)

I think I can manage the days when John is busy, so long as our week ends are filled with sweet moments like this!!

(Oh and I totally intercepted that ball in the pic up above.    John didn't say so, but I'm guessing that I surprised him with my skills!)

Bedtime without Daddy: Part 1

Every night when we put the kids to bed, we have a very specific routine that we follow:

1.   The kids have a snack (they often snack soo much it's practically a whole 'nother MEAL!)
2.  Next, John decides it's the PERFECT time to start chasing them all around and he purposely tries to get everyone hyper.   (I'm sure he does this intentionally;)
3.  Finally, I intervene as the "mean" parent and make them all brush teeth
4.  Then I lay with Abby and Jess in their room
5.   And John lays with Sam and Nate in their room.

That is how it has always been, and that is how I like it!

On Sunday night however,  John had to attend a Priesthood Leadership meeting, and I was left to put the kids to bed myself.   No biggie, right?   (I've totally got this:)

As I started to crawl into bed with Nate he instantly threw a fit!  This is what he said:
"Nooooo, not you!    DAD lay with me...."  and then get this... "You're a Looser!"

(Actually, given the way he talks, it sounded more like, "Yoi a Wooser" but I understood perfectly.)

And there it is.   My THREE YEAR OLD said that!

Part of me wanted to discipline him for it, but the other part of me wanted to take him to the kitchen and give him a big bowl of ice cream or something, just so that he'd like me better:)

In the end, I just kinda patted him and said, "there there" (tsk tsk) "Daddy will be back later."

The little stinker fell asleep just fine, so long as he could run his sweaty pudgy fingers through my hair a gazillion times!

It hurt.

And I had knots in my hair after.

But still I let him.   (So that he'd like me better.)
Sigh.....

Whatever happened to the good old days when I was all he needed:)

"Blah Blah Blah".... and a surprising Sunday event

I had to laugh the other day when some guy emailed John with a physics related question.     (This man had apparently gotten an incorrect result on an assignment and he just could not figure out how to arrive at the accurate result.)  So, naturally, he asked John for help.
   (John is soooo smart;)

What baffled me though, was John's response.   Like... it literally confused me!

Sometimes it seems as though this man I'm married to has a brain that I can't even relate to.
Do you know what that is like?   To be married to someone you don't understand?

I mean, check out this email!

"Hello there:

The reason C is the answer is because the lateral movement of the charge does not affect the amount of work needed to move it.  Horizontally there is no resistance from the parallel plates.

Work =qEd

         = 1.6 E-19 Coloumbs x (1.20E3 Volts/ 0.20m) x 0.16m

         = 1.536 E-16 Joules

Tips:  The electric field strength is calculated by using the separation distance between the plates (0.20m)
The distance the charge is moved against the electric field strength is only the 0.16m, not the diagonal distance between the two positions.

Hopefully this is helpful.  I can explain this better later if this attempt doesn't make sense.

Regards,
John"

Does ANY of that make sense even?
I didn't think so;)   To John, I'm sure it ALL makes perfect sense, and yet  all I see when I try to read that is "blah blah blah blah..."

That's John for ya though.    Flier of toy airplanes, champion smoothie maker, and solver of ridiculously pointless mathematical equations.

Man, I love this guy!!!

(I've been waiting for the perfect time to use this cheesy picture;)

In other news, ...our ward Bishopric was changed today, and John has accepted the call to serve as 1st Councilor.      I've included a picture that was emailed to us of Bishop Heggie, John, and Brother Sloan (that I'm totally posting without their permission, but feel fine doing so because they will never know;).  I'm sure that I will miss our old Bishopric so much because they were such remarkable leaders, but it is also interesting to see how our new Bishop really seems like a Bishop already.   I think John is so happy to get to serve with him.

The past few hours have been interesting to say the least.  Slightly panicky (because I'm needy like that;)... but interesting.   I'll eventually record more about it all in this little journal of ours but I think I should wait and see how my "first Sacrament Meeting alone with the kids" goes before I form an opinion about how I feel about all this:)

(JUST KIDDING!!!)

On being yelled at by a 7 year old

Every Wednesday afternoon I take Sam to piano lessons, (except for the Wednesdays when I forget to;) and then I pick him up a half an hour later.   Occasionally, I'll admit, I run a little bit late.   That was the case yesterday, when at 3:58, I glanced at the clock and realized Sam's class was pretty much over.  I quickly rushed out the door to go get him.

Meanwhile, Sam had finished his lesson, and not wanting to miss out on a single second of his free "play time on the wii," decided to head for home without me.    I literally passed right by him on my way to picking him up, but didn't even notice.   (He later told me, he was waving his arms and everything, but did I see?   Noooooo!)

Thankfully, my sister passed by Sam as well, only she did notice him.   A few minutes later she'd delivered him safely to me, and that is when Sam let me have it.

Like, he really let me have it!

Granted, I think he was just trying to be silly (....I think?)  but he gave me one serious lecture that I'm not about to forget anytime soon.

My favorite part of his rant went like this:

"MOM!  You can't just always pay attention to nature!   You just... like... look at trees, and skies, and stuff!   Sometimes you have to not look only at the road.  You have to look at your KID!!!!

It's always so humbling when my kids point out the things I do wrong.

My only comfort and consolation though, is knowing that one day, someday,  he will drive our family car into a ditch somewhere, or back it into our garage,  and then....THEN....it will be my turn to tell him a thing or two!

The anticipation of that sure to be sweet moment is sometimes what keeps me going;)

Dear Mom & Dad

I found a pleasant little surprise today in my mailbox.
...A letter from Abby!

Not just any letter, but a "Thank you for all you did at Christmas" letter.
Say what?

I plan to ask her about this when she gets home, but I am guessing that this must have been a part of a school activity/assignment.    I mean, I didn't even know my kid knew how to address an envelope, let alone get postage and pop it in the mail without me knowing!

And that whole part where she thanks us for all we did?
Yup....had to have been an assignment.

Assignment or not though, I'll take a thanks from this kid any day!
(Though why her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Jordan have anything to do with this is beyond me;)

Dear Mom & Dad,

You already know what we did for Christmas.
We went sledding with the Salmons at Redford.   We went caroling too.   My favorite thing I did was when you two let me watch "Christmas with the Kranks" with you.  It was lots of fun.
Thank you for "Just Dance Summer Party" the wii game.    My favorite song is "Jai HO (You are my Destiny)"     My second is "Firework."
I loved watching you guys dance to "Barbie Girl."  That was funny!

Anyway, thanks Mom and Dad.

Love Abby

My Voice

I think I must be afraid of not being heard.
I must be, because it recently occurred to me that I have an abundance of journals that I currently use to record every thought, every opinion and every message that I could ever possibly wish to say.

This blog has been a big part of our family history for the past 5 years or so, but can you believe that it doesn't even begin to account for all the journals we have?

Here are some of the other journals we have:

1.
This is a journal that my "uncle" Avard Toone gave to John and I when he sealed us in the temple 11 years ago.    He gave us specific instructions to record our important family moments in this book.

And so I do.

2.
This book contains every love letter/note we've ever written to each other from the time we first started dating.    It is so painfully awkward to read through those early pages of this book,  and a part of me thinks I should really just burn or shred them!  haha.  But still- no matter what dorks we were back whe we dated, it's still a history of us right?

3.
These are journals that I've put together while pregnant with each of our four kids.
I used mod podge to secure some photos to the cover, and inside I often write letters to them, or record some of the highlights of there current age.

I've discovered that I even managed to record some of the "low" lights of this journey called motherhood as well.     For example- just a few pages into Abbys book you can read about the time I put her bouncy chair up on the kitchen counter to sit.   WITH HER IN IT!    Minutes later, I heard that bouncy chair and my TWO WEEK old crashing to the floor!!!

Yup.   Glad I recorded that memory;)

Just recently, I wrote in Nathan's book about how he continues to tag "poopy pants" on to anything he says to me.   (ie: "yes please Mommy Poopy Pants" or "okay Mommy poopy Pants."   I keep thinking he'll grow out of this but it's been a month or two and he's still going strong!)

4.
This binder contains about 3 years worth of emails that John would send to his siblings every Sunday recounting his week.  It begins when he is single, recounts the history of our ever so awkward courtship, and documents the first few years of our marriage, in the form of weakly updates!

I LOVE this binder as it is chalk full of details I didn't even realize we were keeping.
For example- John got a job when we first got married working for a telemarketing company in which he made $7 an hour.   We wrote to his family describing our ELATION at what a good job he got!  lol
(What can I say.  We were young and in love.   Obviously money was of no issue:)

It contains a break down of when our first couple of kids started walking, when we started giving them solids, how sick Abby would get when a new tooth would come in, and how sad we were as we watched close family members pass away.

There are a lot of memories packed into this big black binder, and one day I'm going to find a way to get those letters onto my computer:)

5.
The entries in our big black binder stop just as the entries on our online blog begin.
This blog sorta just replaced our weekly emails to the family, and instead became a means for me to make "WEAK"ly posts about this life I love so much.

Every couple of years, I turn our blog into a hard cover book, and we've collected a few of these now.

It was a profound realization to John and I one day, when we discovered that we literally have a week by week hard copy record of our entire courtship and marriage!

Pretty priceless stuff, I tell ya.
Cheesy, pathetic, dorky, and at times downright embarrassing....but priceless, nonetheless!

When I sit down to read through some of these pages now, I can see so clearly the hand of God in my life and I feel so very very thankful for the evidence of it in these pages.

I've pretty much told my family that if there is ever a fire and they have to leave the house, to make sure they grab THESE books!

....oh, and the Bosch too.
But that just goes without saying;)

* my strengths (and perhaps even my weaknesses;)
* CHANGE
* those I feel least comfortable around

It's a new year

This past weekend we put away ALL our Christmas decorations.
Our pesky little Elf friend mysteriously disappeared.
And all the lights have been taken down for another year.

On Saturday we took our sad but loved spruce tree to Grandpa's house for our annual "tree burning."
It's supposed to bring good luck in the New Year, you know?    For that reason, even though John always tries to simply take it to the dump, I insist on making a burning ritual out of it;)
(Besides, I know that deep down, John really loves to play with fire.)

I'm currently enjoying how wide open and uncluttered my house feels now that everything is packed away for another year,  but it does make me sad that it all came and went so fast.

It was the type of holiday that I love most!

* Lots of time with just my own little family
* Some fun evenings with Grandpa
* A couple of great date nights with John
* John spent a lot of his spare time just playing the piano (glorious!)
* We watched all our favorite Christmas movies
* The kids brushed up on their skating skills a bit
* Nathan graduated from Nursery and became an official SUNBEAM!   (after spending the past 8 years having one of our kids in Nursery - I'm pretty sure that I am headed there next;)
* Of course we completed our 4th annual Lord of the Rings Marathon
* John painted TWO of our three bathrooms!!! (we didn't quite get to the third bathroom...or our basement for that matter, but there's always Easter break right?;)
* Visited with friends
* And enjoyed each and every lazy morning

We accomplished lots and it's time to begin preparing for this New Year!

2013!!!

CRAZY!

I'm slowly beginning to wake up to the fact that I should be starting on my resolutions and goals.
I have a house that needs de-cluttering, a few projects lined up that make that Type A part of me super happy, and lots I know I need to improve on.

Please someone, remind me that there is no time for procrastination!!!

Nineteen dollars for parking!!!

This past week I had a couple of appointments in Calgary on both Thursday and Friday.   They were just quick follow ups, and hardly seemed worth the two and a half hour drive involved to get there, but I do enjoy my trips to Calgary!

Usually, I just rush up alone, but since the kids were still on break, we decided to all go up together and stop at Uncle Chad's house for a night.     My kids LOVE going to Uncle Chad's house!  (I do to- but for slightly different reasons.)

The kids LOVE playing with their cousins Ella, Mason, Tyson and Deacon.
(I love visiting with Chad and tasting all the delicious food that Heather makes!;)

I thought it was cool that Chad had a Christmas tree with all blue lights.     This is exactly what our tree looked like growing up, as a "blue tree" was my Dad's favorite thing about Christmas.
So fun to see it again, and I won't be at all surprised if we have a blue tree next year too!;)
______

We spent quite awhile before bed that night listening to Uncle Chad share funny excerpts from a book he'd gotten out of the Library.   (Chad's home has such a relaxed feel, and they never really seem like they are in a hurry at all.   How he and I could be related yet be soo different, is beyond me;)

______

The kids all slept under the blue tree that night, just like me and my siblings used to do.
So cute!
_____

Things I learned during this particular trip:

* My nephew is quite the sleep talker;)
*  It is actually possible for kids to eat everything off their plates, including the vegetables!
(not my kids- but I did see others do it;)
*  Jalepeno and Cheddar Chips are as tasty now as they were when I was 12 years old.
* John and I have failed miserably at teaching our kids good manners.
*  John would much rather stay back and enjoy a gourmet breakfast of eggs benedict then battle early morning rush hour traffic in Calgary with me.   Say what?
*  As much as I've come to LOVE  Dave Ramsey - I can still blow our budget in 30 minutes flat!   (Curse you H&M!)
*  Paying for parking in the city is ridiculous!!!   $1 gets you 15 minutes.   Why I remember "back in the day" when a quarter would give me a whole hour!   Grrrrrr...
* Some of my younger age relatives think I'm a (and I quote) ... "Weirdo";)
*   Apparently it's not cool to carry a giant bottle of hand sanitizer with you everywhere you go?

We had a great time, and had to bribe the kids back into our van with Cheetos when it was time to come home.
We're already looking forward to another fun time shopping with family, real soon!

New Years Eve at Jewels

On the morning of New Years Eve I got a phone call from Jewel.   I'm pretty sure that she called just to chat and see how my holidays were going so far - but by the end of the call we had managed to plan an impromptu New Years Eve bash at her house.

It was an enjoyable evening that involved my fam, Max, Jewel's family, and Kendall's parents and his brother Lorin, lots of yummy food, and some fun games!

We are always learning new games from Jewel and her in laws, and I'm convinced that they are the type of people that make anything fun!

John must have really been in the party mood because at one point I caught him dancing to Jai Ho with all of the kids.     I'll tell ya this,  John may seem so calm and dignified most of the time,  but he can really cut a rug!  haha
It was perhaps one of the highlights of my year!!

We left around 10:00 and put the little kids to bed so that John and I could watch Lord of the Rings together.    We're  obviously old and boring because we didn't even make it to midnight.    We were asleep long before then!

Abby on the other hand, begged to stay at Aunt Jewel's house as her, Ava and Mya were determined to bring in the New Year wide awake.     They even went so far as to write out a "Stay Awake Declaration" that each person was expected to sign.    Jewel got some footage of them as they were solidifying their plans, and it makes me laugh every time I look at it.

Why do kids even want to stay up late?   I just don't get it?

At any rate, Abby made it past midnight and saw the 1st of January well before the rest of us;)

Here's to a Happy New Year!!!

Blythe Elizabeth

A week ago we got to attend church in Calgary because our newest niece was being blessed.
Grandpa rode up with us, and even though it was a quick Sunday trip, we had a great time.

Blythe Elizabeth is truly a cute little girl!
And her older sister Marilyn just keeps getting more and more beautiful.

At one point, after enjoying a wonderful family dinner,  all of my kids were crowding around little Blythe fussing over each little finger and toe.   Jessica leaned over to me and said longingly,
"Oh Mom!  I just really need a baby sister!"

(It's a good thing she got a doll for Christmas;)

I'm pretty sure there is nothing sweeter then a brand new little baby, and I'm glad we got to finally get up there and see little Blythe!

Happy New Year!!!!

We've turned our Christmas tree into a New Years tree, and the kids are more then excited to stay up all.night.long.

I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen, though I'm not beneath changing our clocks ahead so that we can ring in our "New Year" together!

We hope 2013 brings blessings and happiness for all our family and loved ones!!!

Boxing Day and celebrating almost half a quarter of a Century

Every year we do the same thing on Boxing Day by going on a wintry drive out to Waterton.
We do this every.Single.Year.
I'm not going to lie and say that the kids enjoy it necessarily, because for the most part, the idea of leaving their newly acquired toys for an hour or two is pretty much the worst thing I could ever ask of them.    However, once we get out there, they love it just as much as I do.    Really, I'm sure that they do!:)

I knew it was going to be a beautiful day out there as we spotted a Golden Eagle perched on a fence post along the highway.       Jessica was so excited, that she loudly proclaimed to Grandpa that he must be our good luck "driving buddy" because every time he comes with us - we see Eagles!!

Of course, we also saw lots of deer, sheep, and a giant herd of Elk as well.    After a freezing cold week of minus 20 temperatures the animals were probably all happy for the warmer weather!

To switch things up a little bit, (and to appease our poor children), we stopped at my favorite restaurant Vimy's for some lunch!  I loved it so much, I'm thinking that we'll have to add this in as part of our annual tradition:)

We spent the rest of that day, as well as the day after, lazing around watching movies, playing games together and enjoying the fact that we didn't have to go anywhere!!!

We got a chance to meet up with our friends the Salmons for a bit, which is always nice.    Because John was in the middle of a bathroom painting job I'd signed him up for, and because our house reeked of paint, we opted to go tobogganing.

These kids had endless amounts of energy and kept climbing the giant hill over and over again.
I was happy to stay at the top and visit with Shauna!
And you know...take pictures...and important stuff like that:)

December 28th was an important day for us, as it marked our 11th wedding Anniversary!

ELEVEN!!!     That's so cool of us right?
Okay, really, I know that 11 years isn't much, but it is almost half of 25, which is a quarter of a century.
So really- it's like we've been married for almost half a quarter of a century!;)
Whoa.   When put that way, it just boggles my mind.  hahaha

In the past almost half a quarter of a century we've managed to create and hopefully not wreck four other little personalities who have helped to make the past almost half a quarter of a century so darn blissful.
And yes- it's all been blissful, every last bit of it.   Just ask John;)

To celebrate, we had our niece Ava babysit, and we went to see the Hobbit with John's Dad.
Some people may think going on a date with your Father in Law is not an ideal way to spend an anniversary, but I totally disagree.   It was great fun!    Besides,  it seemed only appropriate, seeing as almost half a quarter of a century ago I attended "The Fellowship of the Rings" with John's parents and a few of his siblings just two days before I married John.   I remember pretending to love the movie, probably just in an effort to impress the future in laws.     Truthfully, I spent the whole movie wanting to gouge my eyes out with a fork!
But here we are,  almost a half a quarter of a century later - and I pretty much like it for real now.  Especially when watching in the company of those who mean so much to me.

That's what marriage does to you.   It changes you for the better right?

Happy Anniversary John!
Here's to many more almost half a quarter centuries together!!!!

Christmas Day

Christmas Day came and went in a blur.
A big, fat, beautiful and lazy BLUR!

Here's what I loved about it:

*  The kids let us sleep until 7:30 am.    If I recall my own childhood - it could have been much...MUCH earlier.  ;)
*  Jessica got an American Doll like she's been wanting for a whole year
* Nathan was confused and thought it was his birthday.  (shocker)
* Sam would occasionally faint with excitement after opening a gift of his  (he tends to be dramatic:)
* Abby was Santa's little helper this year, and I LOVED that she thanked us (her parents) for her gives this year, and NOT that other guy!
* Sam got a little ipod shuffle -but keeps telling everyone that he got an IPHONE!!
* Unwrapping gifts took approximately 60 seconds.   FYI- Cleaning up the aftermath took about 40 minutes;)

* After spending a lazy morning and afternoon playing with the kids, we went over to Grandpa's house for a beautiful Turkey Dinner.   I capitalized those two words to show my respect and love for Max's Turkey Dinners!!!!   num num num....

* After eating a meal fit for royalty - the kids retired to the living room where they could dance to Christmas tunes played by Aunt Rachel on the flute.    (Those who couldn't dance sat on the couch and stared at ipads like a bunch of mindless drones?! lol)

* Perhaps the best gift of all though, is that John finally relented and let Jessica have the puppy she's always wanted!   I have to admit - he's kind of a cutie:)

JUST KIDDING!!!

That's Rachel's puppy THOR!  But if you were to ask Jessica- she'd tell you that THOR was the best part about Christmas Day!!!     (To each his own, I suppose;)

Such a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

The Christmas Eve Party we cancelled, and the Christmas Eve Party we had!

We didn't have much planned for Christmas Eve, which is exactly how I like it.    I love spending my holidays having to be no where at all:)
Little did I know though that plans really had been made.

You see, last week, I had given Sam a stack of Christmas cards and told him that he could write Christmas notes to his friends and pass them out on the last day of school.   Sam spent quite a while on those cards, and though I never checked over his work, I was certain that his friends would enjoy whatever he wrote.    Harmless right?

Well apparently, Sam had more in mind then that.   Instead of simply writing a "Have a Merry Christmas" note - he turned some of his cards into INVITATIONS for his very own Christmas Eve PARTY!!!    I mean, who wouldn't in his position, right?

I knew none of this at all until Christmas Eve morning, when I got a phone call from some parents enquiring about the exact address for this party.     It was the most confusing and embarrassing experience EVER - yet for some reason, all I could do was laugh!   He'd made sure to include the date ("Christmas Eve"), the Time ("10-12 in the day") and the place ("Sam's house")

Geesh this kid!!!!
Nothing like cancelling your 7 year old's Christmas Eve party to kick off the festivities!

Luckily, a few hours later, we were able to have a party.   Just on a much much smaller scale:)
Grandpa joined us for Christmas Eve dinner and showed up with a couple of live Lobsters too!
The kids were delighted by these little crustaceans.  Luckily, despite the fact that Jess wanted to keep one for a pet, we all enjoyed eating them!     I'm afraid John (and many of his siblings) would agree that nothing says "Christmas Eve" like a Steak & Lobster dinner.    I've always been more then happy to go along with this family tradition:)   Yummy!
Jessica was truly entranced with this whole "lobster thing" this year, and actually saved one of the Lobster claws, washed it out, let it dry, and carried it around with her for the rest of the night!!!   She was often found chasing others around waving "The Claw" menacingly in their faces.    (That night,  as we were preparing to go to bed, I went in to check on her and there she was, fast asleep - with the CLAW resting peacefully beside her.    It was both kinda funny and kinda gross, all at the same time.)

After dinner, and before Jessica took some of the dinner scraps to bed with her ...we took a few minutes to read about the birth of Christ.   While John read, we played the parts.   Abby was a wise man.  Sam was a Shepherd.    Jessica was Mary.  And I had to be Joseph because Nathan didn't want to be any part of it.

In fact, the only thing that Nathan wanted to be a part of - was opening presents!    He seemed convinced that it was HIS birthday, and that ALL of the presents under our tree were really intended for him.    We realized this when he came upstairs after dinner excitedly holding the new Pokemon Ball  he'd just unwrapped.   What a little butt!

After we acted out the Nativity, and opened a couple of Christmas Eve gifts (jammies and slippers;) we gave the kids a second to scatter their reindeer food.

They set out a plate full of cookies, a carrot, AND some Eggnog for Santa....
and then it was off to bed!!!!!

I personally love putting my kids to bed on Christmas Eve.  They are just bursting with excitement, yet it's still pretty much the one.time.each.year when they willingly go right to sleep!!
I always look forward to this night for that one reason:)

Because we now have a child who is a "non-believer" we let Abby stay up late with us while we had snacks and watched Christmas with the Kranks.   Then Abby got to help us place the presents under the tree and fill the stockings.
She took this role very VERY seriously, and I think she felt privileged to get to help.

Shortly after midnight, we finally went to bed, and fell asleep looking forward to the fun that awaited us on Christmas day.
